geography of madagascar

madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world by its size with a surface area of 587’041 km˛, is geographically located in the southern hemisphere, farthest west of the indian ocean, 500 km off the east coast of mozambique. geographically, madagascar has a mountain range in the central plateau which occupies about half the total area of the island and is responsible of the ethnic distribution, of the difference of climate and micro-climate and, of the landscape between the east and west coast. a narrow strip along the east coast where the first polynesian settlers settled is largely covered by dense tropical moist forest, while the west previously covered by dry deciduous forest is now mostly an area of savannah. the east coast is battered by the trade winds, the climate became wetter as one moves northward. southern madagascar, particularly the southern part of the tropic of capricorn, is characterized by an arid to sub-desert climat and is covered by an evergreen bush of thorns.

the capital of madagascar, antananarivo is geographically located in the center of the island in the central highlands still called the highlands.
