madagascar orchids

orchidaceae, the family which groups orchids, is the largest madagascan flowering plant family with over 1’000 known species, ranking the island far ahead of the african continent. 90 per cent of orchids in madagascar are found nowhere else with many species very rare.

in madagascar, as is in tropical countries, most representatives of the orchids family are epiphytic, naturally found in the canopy of trees, but terrestrial and lithophytic, on shaded rocks, species are encountered throughout the island.

orchids occupy different habitats, humid rainforests, dry deciduous forests, ’spiny’ forests, secondary grassland and even rocky outcrops ranging from sea level to altitude of 1’500m.

all year long, it is possible to find orchids in bloom in madagascar.
