mammals of madagascar

the first stock of mammal pioneers have reached the island of madagascar crossing the mozambique channel on makeshift rafts. only animals of small body size, capable of lowering their metabolism or become completely dormant could survive such long and perilous voyage. this ability is present in certain species of lemurs, tenrecs and carnivores. furthermore, they are capable of laying down fat in their tails to face periods of food scarcity. once those pioneers reached the island of madagascar geological time did its job of speciation and colonization of all ecological niches.

mammals of madagascar, insectivores, bats, lemurs, carnivores, rats and mices are characterized by their rather “small” size and the high rate of endemism within each group. this, along with other oddity, makes madagascar a very special destination for naturalists and wildlife seekers alike.
