birds of madagascar

the avifauna of madagascar has a very low diversity with only 291 species of birds known to nest in the fourth biggest island on earth. about half of the species of birds though are either endemic or restricted to madagascar and the neighboring islands. endemism is so spectacular that five entire families of birds are known only in madagascar. such level of endemism makes madagascar a very attractive destination for bird watchers from around the world and got them state that when dealing with bird watching in madagascar 'quality' is paramount to anything else.

the common travelers find it surprising that very few, if at all, birds are met while touring in madagascar. the explanation lies in the fact that most of the avifauna of madagascar is either restricted to forestall habitat, 80 to 110 of endemic birds are forest dwelling, or live in wetland areas.
